A group of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers in the House of Representatives have raised alarms over ongoing fresh plans by senators loyal to the ruling All Peoples Congress (APC) to illegally impeach the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki.
Spokesman of the group and House Deputy Minority Leader, Chukwuka Onyema (PDP, Anambra), who disclosed this at a press conference at the National Assembly on Wednesday said Senators Ali Ndume, Abdullahi Adamu and Ovie Omo-Agege were behind the secret plot.
Onyema also alleged that the plotters, with the help of security operatives, had forcefully invaded the Senate chambers earlier on Monday.
“You all know we are on recess and we were busy doing our committee business when information got to us that the Senate chambers was being forcefully invaded by Senators Ali Ndume, Abdullahi Adamu and Ovie Omo-Agege, to come and sit and illegally impeach the Senate President when everyone is on recess.
“We also have it on good authority that they are planning to come back this night and tomorrow morning, aided by security forces, our own security forces,” Onyema alleged.
He warned that the invading senators were out to “truncate and rape democracy” wondering why security agents that should ordinarily protect the lives and property of Nigerians should be part of the illegal move.
He said the PDP lawmakers have decided to keep vigil over the night till tomorrow to prevent the illegality, and thus called on all Nigerians to stand up against the invasion.
He expressed concern that if not nipped in the bud, what is happening in Benue State could repeat itself at the Senate with disastrous consequences for Nigeria’s democracy.
The lawmakers, however, requested that President Muhammadu Buhari should intervene to prevent a possible breakdown of law and order.
