Niger State Badminton athletes had represented Team Nigeria at the ongoing Africa Youth Games in Algiers, Algeria.
The games which commenced on the 19th of July 2018 will end on the 25th of July 2018 in Algiers, Niger state athletes who played previously as winners of the North Central Badminton male and female single and double champions hosted by MINNA 2018 were representative of Team Nigeria at the Africa Youth Game.
Coach Mohammed Ismaila of Niger Badminton and Assistant National Coach of Nigeria Badminton Federation confirmed that Team Nigeria had won Gold in male Team Event and won bronze medal in the female category at Algiers Africa Youth Game.
He further stated that the athletes were in high spirit and well motivated which culminated in the victory achieved, Coach Ismaila stressed professionalism in the side of team Nigeria as one of the added advantage the athletes used in defeating its opponents.
The Africa Youth Game hosted by Algeria is the third edition of the tournament, an international multi-sport event held every four years to complement the current All Africa Games.
The first games was hosted by Rabat, Morocco as an international sportive event created by Lassana Palenfo, current director of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa.
The idea came in 2006, but the very first African Youth Games only occurred in 2010, the 2nd African Youth Games took place in Gaborone, Botswana’s capital City from 22 to 31 May 2014.
The African Youth Games targets the 14 to 18 age group and is thought to contribute to the development of African sport and to the growth of Olympic values as well as act as a trial run for the Olympic Games.
