GRAZING RESERVE: NIGER STATE GOVERNMENT SCALES-UP NUMBER OF GRAZING RESERVES

Arrangement has been concluded by the Niger State Government to scale-up the number of Grazing Reserves in the State.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner of Livestock and Fisheries, Hon. Haruna Nuhu Dukku during a courtesy visit paid on the Emir of Lapai, His Royal Highness, Alh. Umar Bago III to seek for his royal blessing and support for the State Government to under a survey on the Reserves situated in his domain.

The Commissioner stated that arrangement has reached an advanced level to engaging a reputable Company that will invest in reviving the Grazing Reserves that were established since early 1960s.

According to him “the grazing Reserves in Lapai, just as Bobi Grazing Reserve that covers over 30,000 hectares of land, is designed to house Schools, Clinics, Police outpost, Roads among other facilities and most importantly, it will go a long way in addressing the perennial herders-farmers clashes as well as provide a training ground for the teeming youths in area of improved Livestock and Fisheries production thereby reducing unemployment among our youth” he said.

While reiterating determination of the administration of Governor Abubakar Sani Bello in revamping the Livestock and Fisheries sector, Hon. Dukku pointed out that Surveyors has been mobilized to determine the coverage of the Reserves which are located at Tsohon Lapai, Tashibo, Duma, Dadabetsuye, Gabi and Nassarawa respectively in the Local Government.

The Commissioner explained further that the initiative was not intended to take over land from the people of the area as according to him, government has made adequate provision for integration of the farmers and herders who are presently settled in Grazing Reserves urging them to embrace the initiative as it will provide them opportunity for cross breeding, artificial insemination and general patronage as well as marketing of their Livestocks and Fisheries product among other advantages.

In his remarks, His Royal Highness, Alh. Umar Bago III expressed joy over the initiative and pledged an unflinching support of his Emirate to enable the government succeed.
