Chairman, Plateau Chapter of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria Alumni, Dr Ossis Edward on Saturday called on detractors to stop branding ABU an Islamic university.
The Alumni Chairman gave the caution during the inauguration of his newly elected executive council of the Plateau Chapter at the Hill Station Hotel , Jos.
Edward, who is the Head of Department, Theatre Arts, Plateau State University (PLASU), Bokkos, described the insinuation that ABU was being Islamized as “very absurd” and “demeaning.”
“ I wonder why some people could just exclaim or brand ABU as an Islamized institution even when there are numerous Christian staff and students helping in building of this country.
“My advice, a very candid one indeed to those detractors, is to stop branding the ABU as an Islamized varsity to prevent creating any further crack to peaceful coexistence of Nigeria, as the giant of Africa, “ he stated.
He pointed out, “there is no place you go in this country that you will not find indigenous Christians or Muslims, so issue of giving a dog a bad name in order to hang it does arise.”
According to him, ABU is one university where you find neutrality and harmonious working relationship amongst both staff and students alike.
The newly sworn-in Chairman said ABU remains one of best universities in the world with its side and academic performance as a varsity that has the largest faculties and departments.
Edward pointed out that the Alumni was out to give back to ABU what it has given to them, which has made them what they are in the society today.
“Our Alumni is made up of members, who are Governors or one time Military Administrators, Commissioners, Permanent Secretaries and Captains of industries, who are ready to contribute their quota to growth and development of the varsity.
“Aside Governor Simon Lalong, we have nine serving Perm Secs, three commissioners and several others, who are ready to change the tide of activities of the Alumni for the good of members and the institution,”
He said that his vision for the chapter is to see how he could prudently lead the members towards achieving the desired goals and aspirations of the alumni.
Earlier, Mrs Claribel Dana’an, the outgoing Chairman, congratulated Edward and his team for their election, which she believed would bring a great change in the affairs and programmes of the alumni.
Other members of the excos include, Mr Bitrus Ali (JUTH Director Admin.) as Secretary, Mr Emmanuel Wurang; Publicity Secretary, Mrs Usaina Obende, Treasurer, while Mrs Claribel Danaan is Ex-Officio.
