The Kano Fadama farmers have called on Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje to rehabilitate more earth dams in order to facilitate dry season farming and reduce migration from rural settlements to urban areas especially at present when the present administration is bringing out more policies that can make Nigeria greater in the agricultural sector.
The call was made by Kunnawa Dam Fadama Farmers Association when our correspondent visited the dam.
The association’s chairman, Malam Muhammad Mai Albasa disclosed that repairing more dams accros Kano State would open more windows of opportunities to the people mostly youths in boosting their economy with bumper harvests.
He added that since the repairs of the dam two years ago by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, farmers sorrounding Kunnawa Dam areas are busy preparing land for the commencement of the dry season programme where different types of crops would be grown, which is a good channel for employment opportunities.
Mai Albasa said that, “We are appealing to Kano Governor to repair more earth dams in the state because in the near future, the economic progress of our people would become more reliable through agriculture while rural migration tends to be minimal because everybody will continue to be busy at both dry and rainfed seasons with profitable cultivation”. He emphasized.
In conclusion, Muhammad Mai Albasa advised the chairman of Dawakin Tofa Local Government Council to expand the dam so that more communities around the catchment area would also have opportunity to boost their farming using the residual moisture of the dam.
He congratulated Nigerian farmers for getting more support from the Federal Government in different value chains.
