The Honorable Minister, Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports, Barrister Solomon Dalung ascertained that National Youth Games is set as a goal to stem the tide of Youth restiveness in the country.
The Minister made this known during the opening ceremony of 3rd National Youth Games in Ilorin, Barrister Dalung confirmed that the maiden edition of the games held in Abuja 2013 produced talented athletes that represented Nigeria at the 2014 African Youth Games in Botswana and the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa.
The Minister stressed out that the National Youth Games was tailored after the Africa Youth Games which he said are designed for age 17, Dalung stated that for Nigeria to effectively reap from the Youth Games he said athletes ages should not be above 15.
The Minister charged that 2017 Youth Games should be able to produce formidable athletes that can feature in Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina and also Youth Africa Games in Algiers, Algeria in 2018.
The Minister finally assured all the contingents from various states that talent identification committee will pick up the right athletes during the games, he said sports in Nigeria have grown and had contributed immensely to National Unity as well as the detribalization of Nigeria.
Other dignitaries during the opening ceremony is the Kwara state Deputy Governor, Vice Chancellor University of Ilorin, Directors of Sports from various states.
